Cruise to the fort quickly & comfortably by bus

• From the city of Salzburg: Take bus no. 260 from the Salzburg Hauptbahnhof stop in the direction of Zell am See (journey time approx. 1 hour 10 minutes)
• From Zell am See: Take bus no. 260 from the bus stop Zell am See Postplatz or train station in the direction of Salzburg (travel time approx. 1 hour 15 minutes)
• Exit: at the Kniepass fortress stop

Cycling to the fort experience by bike

• Tauern cycle path: Saalachtal route

  The Saalachtal route leads from Zell am See to Salzburg. 101 kilometers through forests, meadows and along the Saalach. Mostly asphalted, interspersed with farm tracks; stages: Salzburg, Großgmain, Marzoll (D), Bad Reichenhall (D), Unken, Lofer, St. Martin, Weißbach, Lenzing, Saalfelden, Ramseiden, Maria Alm, Gerling, Maishofen, Zell am See

• Mozart Cycle Path: Stage 14 from Lofer to Bad Reichenhall

  An easy and at the same time very scenic stage (25.7 km) through the Saalachtal valley, which is surrounded by impressive mountains. The cycle path mostly follows the course of the Saalach river. The stage finish is the well-known spa town of Bad Reichenhall.

The village of Unken is located in the province of Salzburg on the B178 federal highway. Directly at Fort Kniepass there are free parking spaces for cars, four e-charging stations (2 fast charging stations with 200 kw and 2 charging stations with 50 kw) and four bus parking spaces.

• Coming fromthe north on the A8, take the "Bad Reichenhall - Lofer" exit and continue on the main road (B20 and B21) in a south-westerly direction. Immediately after the village of Unken you will reach Fort Kniepass.
• Comingfrom the south on the B311 main road, change to the B178 in Lofer in the direction of "Bad Reichenhall - Salzburg".
• Distance: around 40 km south-west of Salzburg, around 45 km north-east of Zell am See - Kaprun.

Land comfortably at Salzburg Airport to conquer the castle

The nearest airport to Fort Kniepass is Salzburg Airport. It is the second largest airport in Austria and is located directly at the Salzburg-Munich-Vienna-Villach highway intersection. It has very good scheduled connections to major European cities and perfect links to the hubs of Frankfurt, Vienna, London and Zurich. You can reach Unken and Fort Kniepass in around 35 minutes by rental car or cab via the B21.
